OFweek Optical Communication Network reported on June 24 that Sumitomo Electric's G-EPON (Gigabit Ethernet Passive Optical Network) products recently passed the inspection of CableLabs (US Cable TV Laboratory) and met the organization's DOCSIS EPON supply specification. The G-EPON products certified by CableLabs are "FSU7100" and "FTE6083"."FSU7100" is the optical line terminal on the main side of the DPoE system, and "FTE6083" is the ONU user terminal. The DPoE specification is designed for simple use: it allows cable operators to deploy EPON technology over the fiber portion of their hybrid fiber coaxial (HFC) network, while still using the same existing supply and logistical support management systems over the coax portion as a DOCSIS cable modem. This will make it easier for cable providers to offer EOPN and high-speed services to medium and large business users over fiber optic links.MSOs can also reduce capital and operating costs while reducing network complexity.
