With the rapid development of optical communications, the continuous innovation of EPON & GPON technologies, and the continuous improvement of transmission rates (2.5G, 10G, 40G, 100G, 200G, 400G, etc.), subsystem vendors and module vendors have higher and higher requirements for оƬ For this reason, Broadcom, as the industry's leading chip manufacturer, is also keeping up with the pace of market development in terms of chip R&D and supply.OFweek Optoelectronics News made an exclusive interview with Mr. Rajiv Ramaswami, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Broadcom's Enterprise Network Group. The Chinese market is one of the largest operator markets, and it is also relatively advanced in terms of technology promotion. We can clearly see that Japan was the first to deploy EPON, followed by South Korea.By 2007 and 2008, China's optical access era began, triggering a series of optical access revolutions. The initial technology is 1G EPON. Now it has developed to 10G EPON.The Chinese market is the main driving force. When it comes to standards and product definitions, China leads the way.China is also in a leading position in the deployment and mass production of 10G EPON.China Telecom, China Unicom, and even China Mobile are paying more attention to 10G EPON.In 2010, the Chinese government, operators and multi-system operators actively carried out the plan of triple play, which is also the strategic direction of the Chinese government. This determines the operation direction of major operators and multi-system operators. All this tells the device vendors the charm of challenges and the temptation of opportunities. As a leading manufacturer in the field of wired and wireless communication semiconductors, Broadcom has been actively cooperating with Chinese operators.Semiconductor suppliers not only provide chips, but also integrate the technologies and functions required by customers into chips.Broadcom focuses on the concept of SOC (System on Chip), that is, a system-level solution, including providing software to customers. The reason why Broadcom has such excellent service is due to the long-term close cooperation with customers and operators to grasp the direction of their business development and market conditions. At the same time, Broadcom works with customers and operators to develop industry standards. For example, the 10G EPON standard was actually completed in 2008. In order to meet the needs of the Chinese market, China Telecom added some interoperability, interconnectivity and management functions to the 10G EPON standard.Broadcom will also provide solutions more suitable for different regions according to the needs of operators and different markets. And this is actually a process of continuously integrating Chinese local standards into international standards.2) There are very flexible solutions for forward and backward compatibility. It supports seamless upgrade to 2.5G EPON and 10G EPON through PON technology, and does not affect the users who have installed 1G EPON.3) Provide customers with feature-rich solutions.Provides diverse options, advanced control functions, low power consumption measures and ultra-long distance solutions for FTTH/FTTB/SFP ONU support.Because Broadcom's own technology is relatively mature, and it actively cooperates with Chinese equipment manufacturers and operators, there will be initial commercial applications of 10G EPON at the end of this year or in 2011.Similarly, in the field of GPON, Broadcom's solutions also have the following characteristics: 1) Provide a complete series of products and IAD software suites for 2.5G GPON systems.2) The series features industry-leading BCM6818 IAD and BCM6812 bridge devices integrating MoCA, GbE, VoIP and WiFi.3) Broadcom's Linux and VoIP software are widely used in devices above 100M IAD.Compared with other GPON chip vendors, Broadcom has more experience and larger production scale to support our customers.
