Veto of Russia and China stopped the proposal for new sanctions against North Korea presented by the US at the UN

In a proposal, this is how an initiative presented by the United States to tighten sanctions against North Korea ended this Thursday within the Security Council, in retaliation for the new missile tests carried out in recent days. The reason is that, despite the approval of the other 13 members, permanent and non-permanent of the body, two of the permanent members, with the right to veto, made it effective, truncating the issuance of the resolution. The countries in charge of curbing the aspiration of the United States were Russia and China;States that opposed the implementation of the sanctions, which dealt with a restriction on the capacity granted to that country for the purchase of crude and refined oil, with which it sought to pressure the Pyongyang regime.According to international media such as the AFP Agency, some of the delegations present at the Security Council of the United Nations Organization (UN), warned that the panorama unleashed was a scenario that was already planned, and despite having cast their vote positive, they affirmed that it was known that putting the United States initiative to a vote was an accessory process, since the feasibility of its being vetoed by Russia and China was known to be high.In this regard, members of the diplomatic corps present at the Security Council had affirmed that what happened is just a sign of the desire of the United States to express its discontent and rejection of North Korea's ballistic tests, even knowing that the proposed sanctions do not they would prosper. The action, which sought to censure or condemn the United States with its resolution proposal, refers to the recent military exercise carried out by North Korea, with the launch of missiles, which is seen as a deterrent or a threat, and which represents a real risk to important US allies like Japan and South Korea. In that sense, North Korea's weapons tests are seen as "a threat to the peace and security of the international community as a whole."This position on the danger that North Korea represents for the International System, had been exposed prior to the meeting of the Security Council by the US ambassador to said body, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, who appealed for the approval of the sanctions. In that same sense, the Chinese ambassador in said space, Zhang Jun, warned that the desire of the United States, backed by the majority of the current members of the Security Council, only evidences Washington's position to the detriment of the possibility that the diplomatic differences are resolved or addressed through the channels of dialogue and “reconciliation”.Thus, the Beijing government declared itself against the sanctions that the US intends to establish or strengthen, affirming that these are not measures that manage to respond satisfactorily to the crisis or situation of tension that is being experienced internationally. For China, the eventual issuance of a punitive resolution by the UN would only serve to “worse the situation”, referring to the fact that before solving the situation, it would turn the Asian continent into an even worse scenario of confrontation and tension. In this same sense, and contrary to the option of sanctions, the Chinese delegation urged the United States to take other paths that it considers more effective, and before imposing punitive measures, bet on finding meeting spaces: thus, China urged the United States to seek to reinstate spaces for direct dialogue with the PyongYang regime;position that was supported in turn by the Russian delegation that raised a call for dialogue. In statements collected by international media, the Russian ambassador to the UN, Vassily Nebenzia, said that “it seems that our American and Western colleagues suffer from the equivalent of writer's block. They seem to have no answer to crisis situations other than to introduce new sanctions,” he stated.Although the resolution and sanctions proposed by the United States against the Pyongyang regime deal with blocking North Korean imports of products such as mineral fuels, watches, and tobacco, they were also aimed at toughening the fight against actions in cyber scenarios by Pyongyang.According to international media, after the veto of these new sanctions, there is a growing fear about the opportunity that the Security Council will have, despite the fact that its resolutions are binding, to enforce the provisions already issued by the body in 2017 .At that time, and through three resolutions approved by the members, they sought to stop North Korea through economic obstacles, affecting some of the trade channels it has for its supply, as a punishment for nuclear and ballistic tests. One of the main fears in the face of North Korea's military advance refers to the opportunity for that country to develop weapons that combine nuclear technology and missiles, through the formation of missiles with nuclear warheads. The fact, which once again set off alarms in the West in the face of North Korea's military advance, refers to a missile test carried out in recent days, with weapons of intercontinental power, at a time when President Biden was visiting Asian territory.*With information from AFP.We have updated our T&C of the web portal. If you wish to know said update, you can access the T&C by clicking here.Customer service channels Service
